Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have identified a new stabilizing agent of atherosclerotic plaques. These findings have been published in Science Translational Medicine, and show how the immune system can improve the condition in blood vessels to help the body avoid heart attacks.

A new finding suggests that the progression of Alzheimer's disease worsened with the increased interaction of two proteins. The interaction between the phosphorylated tau and the amyloid-beta in its toxic form at the synapses has damaging effects which could lead to cognitive decline.

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have shown that using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure blood flow over atherosclerotic plaques could help identify plaques at risk for thrombosis. The findings, which appear in the March issue of Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging, offer a non-invasive application in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerosis.

The disease atherosclerosis involves the build up of fatty tissue within arterial walls, creating unstable structures known as plaques. These plaques grow until they burst, rupturing the wall and causing the formation of a blood clot within the artery. These clots also grow until they block blood flow; in the case of the coronary artery, this can cause a heart attack.

In a new study published in the scientific journal Neurology, scientists at Karolinska Institutet show that smaller forms of amyloid known as oligomers may be significant in the development of Alzheimer's disease - and are therefore a possible target for future drugs. These new findings add another piece to the puzzle of the complex dementia disease that affects so many people.
